Level 12/20 10 days of trekking with a maximum altitude of 3930m. Stages of 2 to 6 hours, depending on the monasteries. The Khumbu region is cold and dry.
This is an exceptional trek, in the heart of the high valleys of the Khumbu region and its Sherpas, a people renowned for their exceptional physical strength in the high mountains, their legendary hospitality, and their ever-present smiles. The Sherpas are all Buddhist, and in most Sherpa villages, there is an old monastery housing numerous paintings, statues, and ritual instruments. This trip takes you by plane from Kathmandu to Lukla, the gateway to the Khumbu. From this high-altitude airport, you will travel up the Dudh Kosi Valley (or Milk River) to Namche Bazaar, the capital of the Sherpa country, a sort of mini-Thamel with its shops well-stocked with trekking and mountaineering equipment. After a day of acclimatizing to the high mountains, you’ll head due west to Thame, a village famous for its renowned Himalayan mountaineers like Ang Rita and Appa Sherpa. Returning to Khumjung and Phortse, a truly authentic Sherpa village, off the beaten track, the trek takes you along the right bank of the Dudh Kosi River on a path less traveled by trekkers, all the way to the highest point of the trek at Pangboche. The next stage leads to the highlight with a visit to the famous Thengboche Monastery, set amidst stunning mountain scenery. The trail then descends back to Lukla.
