Trip Overview

Level 9/20 8 days of trekking at a maximum altitude of 4600m. Average stages of 5 to 6 hours. A trek starting at low altitude to reach the pass in 6 days with significant ascents.

The Tamang are the second largest Mongoloid ethnic group in Nepal. Their rituals, similar to those of their distant Tibetan cousins, remain tinged with animistic elements attesting to their pre-Buddhist Bön past: exorcisms and divine propitiations are invoked by the Bompo, a Bön priest; animal sacrifices are performed by the Lambu, a traditional healer from distinct clans; while important life events are celebrated by the Buddhist lama. The Tamang people, who have remained largely untouched by development and access to modernity despite their proximity to the Kathmandu Valley, are heavily employed in porterage, the making of Nepalese paper (Lokta, Danphe Bholua), Tibetan carpets, and the creation of Thangkas (Buddhist religious paintings used as meditation aids), an art form in which they have become masters. This journey combines the experience of an authentic and little-visited Nepal, with its traditional villages and vibrant gompas, its hot springs with numerous beneficial properties, its trails dotted with chortens overgrown with vegetation, and the challenge of high-altitude Nepal, with its unpredictable yaks against a backdrop of gigantic glaciers and majestic peaks. We will experience powerful human connections during nights spent with local families, and unforgettable personal challenges (ascents of Tserko Ri or Kyangjin Ri), the efforts of which we will recover from in family-run lodges…

Itinerary

1 Arrival in Kathmandu.
After your visa and customs formalities, baggage claim and you will be met at the airport exit by a representative from the agency. Transfer to the hotel.
2 Transfer by bus to Dhunche then Shyabru Besi.
We leave Kathmandu and head north, climbing a narrow, winding road to a small pass at Kakani, at an altitude of 2,145 meters. On a clear day, there's a beautiful panorama stretching from west to east: the Annapurnas, Ganesh Himal, and Langtang ranges. From there, we descend towards the Trisuli River, passing through cascading terraces, to reach Trisuli, the main town of the Nuwakot district, 72 km from the capital. The road begins a long climb towards Kalikasthan and then passes high above the Trisuli River, which flows at the bottom of the valley. The road enters Dhunche, 42 km from Trisuli, at an altitude of 1,950 meters. The entrance to the national park is just before the town. The road continues in zigzags to Shyabru Besi.
3 Trek Shyabru Besi – Gatlang 2240m 5/6h.
Today marks the start of our trek, beginning with a crossing of a small pass at 2200m, offering panoramic views across the entire Chilime Valley. After lunch, the trail winds through a dense rhododendron forest (stunning in spring when in bloom) to the Gatlang rest stop.
4 Trek Gatlang 2240m – Tatopani (2600m) 5/6h.
The trail leaves the village with a gentle descent into the Gatlang Valley, and we encounter numerous mani walls (engraved stones). We have to cross the river before reaching Thumbachet, where a reservoir has been built to generate electricity. The next village is Gongang at 2230m. Just outside the village, there's a beautiful waterfall, and we still have two hours of climbing to reach Tatopani (hot springs in Nepali). A visit there is highly recommended.
5 Trek Tatopani (2600m) – Nagthali Gyang (3160m) 3/4h.
The path begins with a steady climb through a forest of deciduous trees and rhododendrons to the charming village of Brimadang with its monastery. A little more effort leads to the hilltop, where a beautiful panorama of Ganesh Himal II and Langtang II awaits. A visit to the village's old gompa is also recommended.
6 Trek Nagthali Gyang (3160m) – Bridhim (2230m) 5/6h.
The path descends through a beautiful forest to reach the large village of Thuman with its monastery. The trail continues downhill to the banks of the turbulent Bhote Kosi River, which originates in neighboring Tibet. On the other side, the path winds its way up, then climbs steadily to the village of Bridhim.
7 Trek Bridhim (2230m) – Lama Hotel (2410m) 5/6h.
The trail begins flat up to Khanjim (2235m), a superb viewpoint overlooking the Bhote Kosi valley. A series of ascents and descents leads us into the Langtang region, heavily affected by the earthquakes of spring 2015. The village of Sherpagaon (inhabited by the Sherpas) appears, as its name suggests in Nepali. The trail continues downhill to Rimche and then Lama Hotel.
8 Trek Lama Hotel (2410m) – Langtang (3380m) 3h.
From Langtang village, the path climbs steeply, high above the river, and Langtang Lirung appears through the foliage. The trail crosses the river and ascends through pastures to Ghora Tabela. The path continues its steady climb through yak pastures as the valley widens. It then descends into a valley to cross a stream and climbs back up to Langtang, a large village at 3500m that was buried by an avalanche in the spring of 2015 and has since been rebuilt.
9 Trek Langtang (3380m) – Kyangjin Gompa (3870m) 4h.
The path winds through the village and climbs a ridge dominated by a large, square chorten and a long mani wall. The trail then continues its steady ascent, passing through the small hamlets of Muna and Singdum, before the valley opens up to pastures. After crossing a wooden bridge, the path climbs a moraine from which the village can be seen. A short descent leads to the first lodges and the Kyangjin Gompa cheese factory. The Swiss started this cheese factory in 1955. The afternoon can be spent climbing to the top of the moraine to admire the imposing Langtang Lirung.
10 Trek around Kyangjin Gompa (3870m).
Today is dedicated to acclimatization and exploring the village and surrounding area: the cheese factory, the monastery, and the mountains. For those who are fit, we suggest climbing a small, easy peak like Tsergo Ri, which rises to 4984m and offers a fantastic panoramic view of the surrounding mountains.
11 Trek Kyangjin Gompa (3870m) – Lama Hotel (2410m) 6h.
We leave Kyangjin with a final look at Langtang Lirung and descend via the same path we took on the way up, following the Langtang Khola to the village of Langtang and then to Ghore Tabela where we stop for lunch. The descent continues to Lama Hotel.
12 Trek Lama Hotel (2410m) – Syabrubesi (1570m) 5/6h.
We begin our final day of hiking along the Langtang Khola River, crossing a beautiful oak and pine forest before crossing a suspension bridge and continuing through the rainforest, home to wildlife including the red panda. We arrive at the large town of Syabrubesi.
13 Route Syabrubesi – Kathmandu 8h drive.
We will return to Nepal's capital via the same route we took on the way there. Overnight stay in a hotel.
14 Kathmandu Valley
Today we set off to explore the Kathmandu Valley, starting with the charming city of Bhaktapur, "the city of devotees," the jewel of the valley with its countless temples and scenes of rural life. After lunch, we return to Kathmandu, visiting the Hindu shrine of Pashupatinath, where all Hindus are cremated. Then we continue to the enormous Buddhist stupa of Bodhnath, where Tibetan pilgrims tirelessly circle the stupa, spinning prayer wheels and reciting their rosaries. What an atmosphere!
15 Departure from Kathmandu
Depending on flight times, it will be possible to do some last-minute shopping before heading to the airport for the return flight.
